Pope Alexander VI had a mistress living in the Vatican, and his daughter was famous for poisoning her enemies. Scandals like this represent just a sliver of the corruption that had crept into the Catholic Church by the end of the 15th Century. Martin Luther and other Protestants responded to the depravity by parting ways with Catholicism. But others remained loyal, seeking reform from within the church.
